It is 120% all about story. Ya got that right. It is what made this game the masterpiece it is. It has been ported/polished/remade more than any other title out there in the series. It might seem a little eh by today's standard. For me it is right there behind VI in top place. Nothing like it had happened at the time. And without it VI, VII, even Chrono Trigger would not have happened in the way they did.
Loved watching this! Gave me some more insite and appreciation to my beloved Sonic games~
To do this, even taunt the transition to 3D, and not include Sonic R, is criminal.
I agree that the pre rendered cutscenes in og ff7 is terrible but it just has so much jank that it’s charming. Same thing with a lot of ps1 cutscenes.
38:11 is this sonic adventure 2 battle and was sonic adventure the DX version or the dream cast version? The remakes have worse quality and animation.

I'd love to see an episode of this show about APPEAL, i've always felt that was the vaguest principle of animation

Note for CD and S2, they were developed at the same time and by 2 different parts of SEGA. CD was developed in Japan, meanwhile S2 was made in the US. Other than being under the SEGA name, they aren't related, and with the release of Origins, it's been shown that CD is, in fact, BEFORE Sonic 2. Note for S3 and S&K: The FULL game is S3&K, with S3 locked onto the S&K cart. They were split due to limitations and a deal with McDonalds of all things. S&K is an expansion. Chaotix Fun Fact: Mighty is actually a resprited Sonic from back when the game WAS a sonic game, and called Sonic Crackers (or Sonic Clackers if you think it's a mistranslation on SEGA's part)
I watched this video when Tango Gameworks got shuttered by Microsoft and it made the Hi Fi Rush section feel really sad.
"[the slow backwards retreat] is probably the funniest animation in 8 bit final fantasy" I raise you the Mini scuttle on the victory walk-off-screen which travels about half as fast as your non-mini'd heroes but animates about 10 times faster. It's my favourite
this is a really good video. i've come back to watch it 3 times by now. months apart. in my case, it's probably more because of the subject matter (i really really really want to replicate this animation style) than the video, but the fact that i remember this concept as the one that comes from this specific video says something. usually i remember the concept, not the video.
I have never once played FF7, I’m old enough to but just haven’t. I enjoyed the deep dive into the comparison very much so.

16:50 I get your point, but I don't think this is Sonic Team's doing. I don't know exactly what goes on behind the scenes, but chances are it's big executives trying to copy whatever is successful at the time, the developers have to find a way to justify it to fit sonic's aesthetic and themes (to various degrees of success). It's imposed limitations that after a while you get used to and try to make the best you can with what you're given. But for me, it makes the games feel insecure: huge, empty, realistic natural landscapes are not Sonic. BOTW's melancholic hope does not fit a cartoon inspired character who's all about speed. Without the jukebox I probably wouldn't have finished Sonic Frontiers. I cannot stress enough how weird Sonic feels in a realistic environment, especially for that same place to have absolutely random obstacle courses. You wouldn't make a photorealistic Mario game. Sonic is meant to be about freedom, speed, confidence, impulsivity: this clashes with the franchise's lack of confidence.

I think it's a shame that Sonic the Fighters was skipped for this list because I honestly believe that was PEAK 3d cartoon animation for sega. It really utilized the fact that the these characters are exaggerated and wacky to make some fun animations for how they fight and express themselves. They also used Squash and Stretch to really elevate the impact of big hits and knock outs. I would've loved to hear someone with a more nuanced view of animation's take on that game.

Another thing about DBFZ: The VAST majority of character moves are recreations of movements that the characters make in the shows, films, and occasionally even the manga. And I don't just mean the special moves. I mean the individual, single button attacks are just ripped from the anime itself. And we can TELL, and it looks GOOD. That level of attention to detail for DBFZ is INSANE
What are all the games used in order?
People seem to be comparing Nier to Stellar Blade, but I realized it might largely comes down to Nier Automata being "old" to modern audiences (7 years ago!). For me, the biggest thing that impressed me when I first played NieR was how fluid the animations are, seamlessly & responsively linking to any action the player does. This is not something Stellar Blade even comes close to

I still believe this holds true for Overwatch 2. This is one of the things that I'm still glad for the team to keep this consistent. The new heroes still got their characters convey in First person.
The only disagreement I have is that Sonic CD was made before Sonic 2, so the CD criticism being compared to Sonic 2 isn't totally accurate rather CDE should be compared to Sonic 1. But other than that I agree and love your video
